Charles Eames

Charles Eames’ life and work represented the nation's defining social movements: the West Coast's coming-of-age, the economy's shift from making goods to producing information, and the global expansion of American culture. In an era of common objectives, Charles and Ray Eames partnered with the federal government and the country's top businesses at the time to lead the charge to modernize postwar America. Charles along with Ray Eames is among the most important American designers of this century. They are best known for their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, industrial design and manufacturing, and the photographic arts.

Charles moved in 1941 to California where he continued furniture design work with molding plywood. In 1946, Evans Products began producing the Eameses' molded plywood furniture. Their molded plywood chair was called "the chair of the century" by the influential architectural critic Esther McCoy.
