Part of the Platner Collection, our dining table is inspired by Platner’s designs from 1966 is an elegant addition to your dining room. This iconic piece features steel rods to form the curved table base. Mr. Platner, who worked in the firms of Eero Saarinen and Kevin Roche in the early and mid-1960"s, introduced his collection of chairs, ottomans and tables in 1966.

Known as the "Platner Collection", in the original design, each piece glass rests on a sculptural base of nickel-plated steel rods resembling a shiny sheaf of wheat. Platner designed both the structure and the production method for these designs, forming his primary contribution to the mid-century modern furniture movement and is still an enduring icon of 1960"s Modernism.

Our version of the Dining Table features 5/8 inch thick tempered glass resting on a sculptural base of stainless steel rods. The rods are polished to a medium shiny finish. (Note: Our version is slightly taller than the original table height, to accommodate todays seating preferences.)

In comparing our Platner style dining table and the one Knoll sells, there is a slight visual difference in the way we curve our base, but most people don’t notice this. And the glass is pretty much the same: tempered and the bevel edge details.

However, there are some big differences in the way we construct our table base, to wit:
  • Our frame is made of stainless steel which is polished to give the shiny look. Knoll uses mild steel, and then it is chrome plated. Chrome plating does give a shinier finish, but it also is subject to bubbling and if gets a deep scratch, there is really no way to easily fix it and depending on the depth of the scratch, the frame can rust.
  • Our frame is made taller than the Knoll version. Most people prefer a table that has the modern table height of 29.5 inches. The Knoll version table height is about 28 inches, which is low in todays standards.
  • Our frame is less wobbly than the Knoll version, because we have added an extra support ring at the bend. This doesn’t affect the visual look of the table, but there is a noticeable improvement in the overall stability of our table compared to Knoll’s
  • We include a clear plastic ring around the bottom to prevent damage to the floor.
